The Wrong Side of a Bad Decision
Do you struggle with knowing yourself? Have you ever found yourself in a position where you did something that you didn’t even want to do? You knew it wasn’t the right choice to make and yet you look back and see that you made the choice anyways. What causes this to happen?
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Romans 7:15-20 (ESV)
Learning Leads to Freedom
As leaders, volunteers, and servants of Christ, we know that God wants the best for us. In fact, He wants better for you than you want for you! He intends that we live in freedom and experience true life in Him. It is never God’s will that we should be anything less than complete in Him.
One of the greatest things we can do to grow in Christ is to know ourselves better. We need to understand the desires of our hearts, the temptations that beset us, and the things that bring us closer to God. If we will come to Him, asking Him to produce Christlike awareness in us, He will always do it. Then we can begin to truly live as we begin to be changed from the inside out, knowing where it is that God is currently working on our character.
Paul knows, and states very clearly, that nothing good dwells in his flesh. His spirit wants to do what is right, but living with sin makes it nearly impossible to be alive in your spirit. The good news is that we can know these sins that dwell in us. My challenge is that you identify those things in your flesh that cause you to do what you don’t want to do.
My challenge is that you identify those things in your flesh that cause you to do what you don’t want to do. Write them down and pray that God would begin to reveal to you a game plan for ruthlessly eliminating them from your life.
