The End Brings a Beginning
For those of you reading this on it’s original release date, Christmas has come and gone. Gifts were exchanged. Trees are being removed. Family meetings are coming to an end. Work has returned and a new year lies before you. But what does this next year hold for you?
This time of the year is filled with people making goals, resolutions, lists, and plans. The new year is almost like a magical reset button. We recognize our lack of progress or failures in the previous year and vow to do better next year. Or we see that we did ok last year but want to make the next year even better.
This, of course, is a good thing. But, we might be missing a key ingredient.
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5
All of the best plans, goals, and resolutions are powerless to give us true life. We set them, knowing that there is a better life than we are currently experiencing. And, in a rush to see results, we lean on our own understanding and come up with a strategy that looks good to us while disregarding the better plan that the Father has for us.
Jesus says that we can do nothing apart from Him. He is talking about doing things that lead to true life. A plan to lose weight can be made by us. We can resolve to visit the gym multiple times a week and eat less but, if we recognize a weight problem, Jesus may have a more life giving remedy. He may suggest for you to fast as a way to become aware of your unhealthy obsession with food. He may then lead you to pray and seek godly wisdom from a spiritual leader who tells you how he overcame food obsession and has been longing to help you but didn’t know how to approach you.
In any case, the discipline or activity is a means to true life found only in Jesus.
So, as we head into the new year, use this time to intentionally seek God’s advice for finding true life in the next year. See what practices He wants you to implement that will draw you closer to Him.
Have you ever made a rule of life? Have you ever heard of it? It’s simply a way of recognizing areas in your spiritual life that need some structure and assigning life-giving spiritual disciplines to guide you to the Father.
