“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:12-17)
The Qualities of Jesus
Colossians 3, of course, is not an exhaustive list of Christlike character, but Paul gives us a beautiful list of what life in Christ should look like, using Jesus as the prime example. We see that Jesus has a compassionate heart. He is full of kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, love, and peace. He is thankful. His Word dwells in us and teaches us wisdom.
Wow! What a list. How many of these qualities do you see in yourself? Not all of them? Well, I have good news for you: Paul encourages us to put these things on. Even better than this, Jesus will empower us to do these things as we strive to be like Christ. It’s not about trying to do what Jesus did, it’s about training ourselves to live in His presence!
The Goals of Jesus
So, if the above are the qualities of Jesus, then what are His goals? It’s actually quite simple. He wants us to be like Him! Ultimately, He wants to see a transformation occur in our lives. An inner transformation. A transformation of the heart. He wants us to put on compassionate hearts, humility, kindness, meekness, forgiveness, peace, love, thankfulness, and wisdom.
This leads to us doing the will of God, just the way that Jesus lived with these qualities and chose to do the will of His Father. Then we will do as Paul says, we will do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.
What Are Your Goals?
For those of you reading this on its original release date, the new year has just begun. If you’re like me, you’ve spent the last few weeks contemplating what your goals are for this year. Hopefully, you’re not just looking at weight loss, reading lists, and financial goals.
This post is meant to challenge you. Focus your goals on spiritual transformation. Set your mind on things above (Colossians 3:2). Resolve to meet with Jesus daily in a meaningful way. Ask Him to change you from the inside out. The beauty of this process is that the results ultimately affect all areas of our life. As we are fulfilled in Christ, our attitude changes, our desire for unhealthy desires change, and our new outlook on life leads to open doors that we never could have walked through by focusing on the outward goals.
It Takes Intentionality
It’s important to realize that spiritual change for the good doesn’t happen on its own. We are all constantly transforming. Our lives are not in neutral. In order to experience transformation into Christlikeness, we have to set out a plan while maintaining a focus on God’s presence as the ultimate goal. The plan doesn’t have to be extravagant or full of details. The best thing you can do is recognize your faults and struggles and find a discipline that realigns you with the Father. A great resource that I have recently used is Grace Goals by Arabah Joy. This workbook allows you to state your goals while searching the Scriptures for God’s wisdom. Then it helps you focus on God and His calling on your life to make sure your goals are targeted and true to His calling. You can use the link in the sidebar to find out more details.
